This topic is very situation based.

I will text to friends and family members when I know they can afford it, and I have something that can be said quickly. But I can only do that from my cell phone. I can't text from a public phone or from a friend's phone when my cell is out of battery power. And if I need to have an in-depth conversation with someone, nothing is better than picking up that phone and dialing their number.
Right now I'm in an isolated area, so a lot of my human interaction comes from phone calls and the internet. I like it best when I can talk to someone via chat or hear their voice. It fills my social bar, to use Sims terms.
