Shouldn't there be more options here?
I really don't think dismemberment is ever a good plan when creating a punishment. Plus, the girl obviously didn't know how to take care of a kid. I know when I was young, if I put my sister in a closed sleeping bag and even dragged her around (much less "running" through the house) I would have gotten a stern talking-to.
But I think parents are afraid of scolding their children now, and allow for "idiocy" to penetrate every bit of our culture.
Every day I am seeing more and more spelling errors. Some grammatical flaws I could understand, but outright spelling errors on t-shirts, professional websites, and printed materials make me question as to whether we'll even see a dollar bill with "NOE" printed on the back.
I'm not saying that spelling things right is the only sign of competence, but we live in an age when Britney is still making front page headlines instead of quietly being taken away to an institution. Or heck, let's ignore her entirely and focus on the mass genocide being perpetrated in Darfur. Or how global warming isn't bunk. Or any of the many, many things that could make a difference in our very lives instead of more piles of horse hockey.
The bottom line is, idiocy will permeate as long as we let our children play with video games and watch tv instead of reading books and playing outside. It will exist for as long as we tolerate bad grades, poor manners, and repugnant behavior. This is the most poorly behaved society in civilized history. And I blame parents. I blame them for coddling their children, for giving them exactly what they want instead of what they need. I blame them for putting up with the very behavior they should be attempting to correct. I blame them for creating monsters and insisting that they can do nothing about it, calling on tv show nannies to do the job that is theirs.
To parents: Stop shirking your responsibilities! Just because you have the money for something doesn't mean you put it in their little hands without true effort on their part to earn it. Teach your child the value of a dollar, the good and bad things to say, the right way to eat, to talk, to walk. And follow these things yourself. Your child isn't going to learn anything if you take over the remote and tell them to go outside or read a book. Read for yourself, read to them. Play with them, learn what kind of people your children are, because you have a very short time with them.
