From Frankenstein foods to glowing cats, what are your thoughts on eating and creating genetically engineered plants and animals?

It is awesome

I am all for cyborgs riding on flying tigers that shoot lasers from their eyes. The downfall being that if one of those tigers gets sick, they're all dead.

Dr. Moreau, here we come!

Oh, it sounds interesting. But when a bear has the intelligence to break down doors or dictate messages, woe betide our human brethren!

Plants yes, animals....not so much

Seeing as how like 75% of all corn in the world, nearly all of corn produced in the US is genetically engineered to produce their own pesticide, it's hard to argue against something that is so effective.

But when genetic engineering comes down inserting a firefly gene into crops that allows the crops to glow when they need to be watered, it becomes a little unnecessary.

As for animals, I don't really like the whole "Let's mix genes between animals!" deal...If it is beneficial to the health of the animals, it's not as bad. But generally, I don't like the idea of playing God with other creatures.

Basically, anytime genetic engineering oversteps the boundary of practicality and necessity, I don't feel like it is necessary.

genetic engineering: yes

Genetic engineering can be very beneficial, especially in those plants that have a significant role in a person's everyday diet. This can definitely be useful, especially with so many health conscious people, in ensuring daily health requirements in one's diet, like genetically altering rice plants. In addition, genetic engineering provides the opportunity for cool new ideas (like banana vaccines) to be tested and keeps science moving forward, since there are so many different methods and uses for genetic engineering. However, eventually I think there needs to be a limit or a guideline to show when a certain test has become excessive, especially while dealing with animals.

Genetic engineering

Like someone alreayd said, people at numerous universities (I think mainly Cornell) are workign to make edible vaccines using genetic engineering. This will alow them to be able to be transferred easily between nations as well as easliy taken. Also, it allows for production of certain crops through the winter months due to putting a specific fish gene in the crop genome. So, I think it is a good idea.
