I love Poker and I hate it when people say that it is just the luck of the draw but I would be idiotic to suggest that it is pure skill. Skill is important especially when there is a skill disparity at a poker table where there are a couple novices and other experienced players. Skill can be used to abuse the novices by being aggressive and raising pre-flop to get them off hands but when there are players of equal skill than luck plays a gigantic role in determining the winner of most pots

I've played a lot of poker in my day, and I can tell you right now that skill is a huge part of the game. However, you do need luck at times. Even if you have bad cards for most of the game, you can still potentially win if you outsmart your opponents. The game is really about your opponents, not your cards. But sometimes it does come down to the cards, and that's when you may need to be lucky, if you ended up making an unsound decision. The whole concept of bluffing was implemented into poker for the very reason that a game based soley on luck would not be as dynamic or fun.

While all games of chance require some amount of luck it is mostly skill that plays out when it comes to poker. For instance being able to read your opponent is critical otherwise your good hand that you got by luck will loss to your opponent's better lucky hand. Skill is what will allow a player to get to the point where they can win with luck. In the end a game of poker does require luck to win, but skill can allow you to almost create your own luck.

You really need both... but since you see the same faces over and over again in the poker championships, it seems like skill matters much more luck
