Re: Re: Homophobia
Homophobia: irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals Taken directly from Webster's dictionary. Gay: 1. Of, relating to, or having a sexual orientation to persons of the same sex. 2. Showing or characterized by cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement; merry. 3. Bright or lively, especially in color: a gay, sunny room. 4. Given to social pleasures. 5. Dissolute; licentious. n. 1. A person whose sexual orientation is to persons of...

I believe that once a baby could exist on it's own, without the mother (with medical care), then it's a human being. Otherwise, as the wise writers of House M.D. put it, it's a parasite, living off the mother. I find it interesting that people make the case that all abortion should be outlawed because unwanted babies have as much right to exist as the wanted. It's interesting, because I wonder how these people would feel if they were raped and forced to carry the baby to...

'Nuff said. ... Well, not exactly. See, the administration has taken it upon themselves to educate Third World countries (such as Ethiopia and some other Sub-Saharan countries) about this "abstinence only" idea. The only problem is, it doesn't really work, and so HIV and AIDS spreads around these countries like wildfire, when what we really need to do is drop a load of condoms into the area and teach the people how to use them. People are going to have sex. All around...

As someone who has left not one, but two relationships behind when they couldn't get away from their games, MMO or otherwise, I resolutely say they are bad. When you stop making friends in a face-to-face way, you lose a great deal of social awareness of what you should and shouldn't do. MMOs can be a great way to waste some time, but often, they become all-consuming (speaking as a former MMO player myself) and devour the rest of your life. This isn't a new trend, and it...

As much as I would like to have a job that makes ridiculous amounts of money, I know I wouldn't be happy in it. I think it depends on the person, of course, but you should do what you love, not what makes the cash. I really love teaching, and I plan to become an university professor. A job, which, once you get it, entails not too much money a year, lots of work and consistent effort, and ridiculous amounts of stress to even finish a PhD and get an interview at the university of...

It's just silly to claim that there can't be aliens. There is a near-infinite universe out there, to think that we are the only things that can evolve out of the primordial goo is just ridiculous. Unless you don't believe in evolution, in which case, you're the alien. As for Nessie and Bigfoot. I'm not all that impressed. They're stupid little tourist attractions, nothing more, really. And as for the Flying Spaghetti Monster... It's a joke. It's...
Posted by munineye on 01-02-2008 in Do you believe in life outside the earth? Why bother?
The only reason I've started "making" my bed (which just involves pulling the covers up to cover the sheets) is because our dog likes to lie on the sheets and I don't like sleeping with bunch of hair. That being said, I usually don't bother to make my bed otherwise. I've never needed to. I started out with the top bunk to a bunkbed, which if you've never had, it's really hard to put sheets on or make it look decent. I usually try to make my bed now...

This is really an awful discussion. The fact that people can actively choose a particular sex and say, "That one's better" just astounds me. It's like saying "Black people are better at this, but white people rock so much harder..." Do you hear yourselves? Here's a quick run-down of what each sex does within a HUGE and gross (in both meanings of the term) generalization: Man- hunts Woman- gathers Man- protects Woman- nutures Man- hurts Woman-...

Why can't we hear more of them? Because we're constantly remaking old movies, or sequelling things that don't need to be sequelled. (Yes, I just made that a verb.) Cinderella? Cinderella doesn't need a sequel! The Little Mermaid doesn't need a sequel! Just because you want to tell another story in the same world as those stories doesn't mean you have to make it a sequel. Make it something new. There are writers out there for a reason. They get paid to write...

Mmm, touchy subject. Humans are designed to eat meat. Our gut is designed to digest meat, and we are designed to eat plants. Look at our teeth. We have molars, to chew up difficult and hard plants, sharp teeth to rend flesh, and incisors to break apart Legos-I mean begin the vegetable process. I don't think giving up meat altogether is a great thing, and certainly not going vegan. But limiting your contact with meat to free-range poultry, Kosher beef, etc. isn't a bad way to stay...

Beneficial? As far as crimefighting or daily life? Daily life, I'd have to go with flying. Although it does require you bundle up a little more than otherwise, and no more wearing skirts. As far as crimefighting goes, I'd go with telepathy, with some caveats. You could read opponent's moves before they made them, pinpoint where someone is just by thinking about them and isolating their brainwaves, and depending on your power set and how well you can train, you could make...

Posted by munineye on 01-02-2008 in Genetic EngineeringWell, yes and no.
Humans have done ridiculously awful things to their environment. They lay waste to anything and everything in their path. Small gestures towards saving what we have lost are meaningless in the face of destruction of countless species, habitats, and indigenous wildlife (not to mention indigenous peoples!). Trying to assign value to a species depends on the background you are looking at. If we're looking at assimilating the species surroundings to fit their lives, humans win. But,...

I think that cohabitation is a great plan for a couple who are thinking about getting married. I think they should live together for about two years before making any real plans to get married. That way by the end of the first year, both should be pretty comfortable with each other and used to the way their partner handles things. It also gives them plenty of opportunity to get out before they make the huge investment that a wedding and a marriage. Personal experience: I was dating this...

I stopped drinking soda, but when I did, I drank Diet Coke. I could always taste the difference between the two (although I railed against people who said they could until all I drank was Diet). Now I just drink water, tea, and fruit juice. It's all so much better for you than soda.

Agreed, but first we need better educated Americans. Raise spending on schools, fund more kids to go to college. To have a popular vote, we must first have caring, educated individuals, otherwise madness ensues.

People make ridiculous amounts of money off of intellectual property. They harp continually about their money being stolen by "pirates" who share their files over the internet with other "pirates" for non-monetary gain. If I want a copy of, say, Aqua's album "Aquarium", I could into a store and pay for it. But why should I shell out this much money (cds are more expensive than ever) for this cd, when all I want is that one song I can't get out of my...

Because if you're using a desktop, I'd have to say Windows. It's somewhat clunky for someone unused to dealing with computers, but it gets the job done and it knows exactly what it's doing. I'm always a little disturbed that it's not easy to see what programs are running on a Mac. When using a laptop, however, I use Mac. They run cooler, have a longer battery life, and the Mac setup looks and handles better than a Windows laptop. They're also lighter and...

I also love how their vision of 2015 seems almost plausible, if it weren't for the flying cars and ridiculous 80s inspired fashions. Then again, clothing styles do go in waves. But they kept it relatively minimal in outside influences, so it seems a little more plausible than the great monoliths of 1984 or Metropolis. Sadly, I think America's "melting pot" idealism has gone the way of the dodo. As much as I would like to think that we could allow for multi-lingualism in our culture, it's not going to happen. We don't fund our schools to teach children how to speak different languages at early ages, even though it has been proven that is the best time to do it. The mere fact that we find language barriers annoying bespeaks our own prejudice against those from other backgrounds,...

And while Facebook has these glaring applications, MySpace has the tackiest profile pages this side of Las Vegas, replete with tons of videos, music files, and animated greetings that just make me want to vomit. This topic is very situation based. I will text to friends and family members when I know they can afford it, and I have something that can be said quickly. But I can only do that from my cell phone. I can't text from a public phone or from a friend's phone when my cell is out of battery power. And if I need to have an in-depth conversation with someone, nothing is better than picking up that phone and dialing their number. Right now I'm in an isolated area, so a lot of my...

Most people like J-random superheroes, but there's a certain consensus on the awesome inherent in a few of the ones you've listed here. For coolest, I have to say Batman. He oozes awesome and angst. For my favorite, it has to be a tie between The Flash and Negative Man of the Doom Patrol. Best is quite relative. For most effective, it'd have to be Superman. I'm all for swearing, but for the love of all that is, please don't do it in front of children, and don't make it your every third word. I admit, I swear like a sailor, but I avoid doing so in a child's vicinity (pre-teen) and I use the words how they were meant to be used. As expletives. They are meant as intensifiers and ejaculations (don't laugh, that's what they're called), so saying a long string of curse words isn't really going to help matters...

I really don't think dismemberment is ever a good plan when creating a punishment. Plus, the girl obviously didn't know how to take care of a kid. I know when I was young, if I put my sister in a closed sleeping bag and even dragged her around (much less "running" through the house) I would have gotten a stern talking-to. But I think parents are afraid of scolding their children now, and allow for "idiocy" to penetrate every bit of our culture. Every day I am...
